About Me

Ian Nicholson

  • Studied Photography at Nuneaton Art College as part of my art foundation course -1987.
  • Started B/W 1989, running my own darkroom.
  • Darkroom became bedroom for my daughter 1996.
  • Still using my 35mm film Praktica BC1/B100 SLR with Fuji Velvia 50.
  • Started digital in 1998 with Fuji 0.85mp camera.
  • Upgraded to Fuji Finepix F401, 2mp interpolated to 4mp.
  • Next upgrade was to a Fuji S7000, 12mp.
  • Now using 2 Nikon d70’s,  6.2mp D-SLR.
  • Lenses 17-35mm wide angle, 28-80mm and 70-300mm zoom.
  • Images are sold through shops, restaurants, Internet & magazines etc.

1989 – 2004 was spent as a freelance programmer, occasionally selling images or doing one off assignments.

I also helped and ran courses for a well known photographer in West Wales for a few years.

Being involved with computers also allowed me to practice my second passion, digital editing.

My pastimes include Scuba diving, mostly off the West Coast of Wales, Milford Haven and St Brides are my favourite haunts, diving around 5 to 58 mtrs used to be my forte’, but now it’s a more leisurely 44mtrs max.

Another pastime is walking, up to 25 miles in a day, through Welsh Countryside. There is plenty of beautiful landscape to keep you occupied on a walk. 2006 I covered 100 miles in four days.

Bouldering at Llangorse Climbing Centre is another favourite pastime.

But sadly most of these are waiting for me to return back to normal health after a couple of bad years and some serious illnesses, all of which are now behind me, thankfully.

A real thank you to all my customers who stayed loyal through that time, many thanks.

What would I really like to be doing? Apart from being out there taking photographs, running Courses, I just love watching people when they start to understand what light is all about..

Apart from that, subtractive light portraiture……..
